OG youtubers the Fine Bros we’re some of the first to hit it big and turn their youtube hobby in to a profession. In fact more than a profession, a full on production company pumping out multiple videos daily.

Their bread and butter became a series of videos called ‘React’, Kids React, Teens React, Old People etc…. Recently, they announced a new project in which they are launching a global ‘React’ community that includes licensing their series and format.

The Internet, fickle and quick to temper, was instantly enraged at the Fine Brothers attempt to crack down on ‘React’ copycats.

Since the debut of this clip last week they have started to hemorrhage subscribers, and have even published a new clip where they attempt some damage control. Both videos have been smothered with downvotes.

You can even watch a live feed of the Beanie Wearing bros loosing subscribers.

So here’s the deal:

I know the Fine Bros, a little bit. We don’t hang out we’re not sharing lattes and talking about how horrible the latest batch of click bait titles on buzzfeed are, but I do consider them friends. I think their intentions were good, but their pitch was a miss.

I remember way back when Ask a Ninja did something remotely similar with the ‘Ask a’ concept. trying to put an end to a growing number of channels that dared you the viewer to ask a made up character for answers.  (it didn’t work)

The example the bros give with Britain’s Got Talent VS America’s got talent. Let’s me clear of this, I’ve spent about 15 years working in reality TV (for better or worse) and I’ve seen a shit ton of the same crap shows rebranded, remarketed and recreated. You CANNOT copyright an idea, you cannot copyright ‘people talk to a camera about a thing’, You cannot copyright ‘People sing to judges and get judged’, you cannot copyright ‘Angry youtbers tell OG content creators to stuff it’.

But you can trademark a brand and copyright graphics, and more or less some format aspects and this is what the guys are really talking about.

America’s got Talent, can’t sue the Voice, the Voice can’t sue American Idol and so on.

I do believe their intentions we’re solid, but were … ambiguous and off putting.

But hey maybe I’m just looking for the best in my optimistic outlook of my youtube brethren.

So let me know what you think;

Have the Fine Brother’s Lost their f’ing minds or Were they just misunderstood?
