Episode Two

Podcasting 101: Software, recording and editing

Previously I talked about our Hardware set up,  now I’d like to reflect a bit on the software side of things.

I’m used to video and within that realm dealing with audio of video is really pretty easy. However approaching this I took a completely different approach. In the past I’ve watched as we took a ‘set it and forget it’ so of attitude to recording audio. We’d start recording and let it go in one long string, occasionally marking time code.

So when I sat down to record 3 back to back episodes of the Kick In Show podcast I did similarly.

We’re using Audacity, fyi , a free audio software. I wanted to use adobe Audition, but for whatever reason I couldn’t get it to find my audio input and defaulted to Audacity as a program I’ve some limited experience with. Hopefully in the future I’ll get Audition figured out as I believe that’ll be easier and faster to use.

Back to recording; Thankfully I broke up the episodes ending and saving the file after each individual show was recorded. What I wish I’d done was stop and start after each segment break. Adding in markers during recording proved to A) be sloppy and B) be relatively useless.

As I was already moon lighting between host, producer and audio engineer trying to drop in markers while audacity recorded was not  very helpful. In the end I had a bunch of markers that were often minutes off where the segment started or stopped. Which was somewhat helpful, but apparently with audacity the markers don’t “stick” so later when I made my first edits, the rest of the marks became increasingly off.. thus completely useless.

In the future I’ll be recording until I feel the segment has run it’s course and then start a brand new track for the next segment.

I’ve already begun creating Quickeys/macros to speed up Audacity and maybe in the future I’ll post a few of those.

Next Time: Getting it all set up and on iTunes (assuming I get it up)
