The site pulled in 2 million views daily only a week or so after it’s launch. A simple concept; users upload selfies and vote on each other’s pictures. Are they Hot or Not. It’s actually something so hardwired to our own brains that a 2006 study determined our brains categorize and decide if someone is in fact Hot or Not before we even know it.

The question is, how does a company grow after reaching a viral peak?

Many people would have been fine to just sit back and let a site generating two million daily views exist and live off the small slice of ad revenue that brings in. Which when I say small, is a fairly nice chunk daily!

But sites that don’t change or grow often find that traffic plateaus and then plummets. This is why we see the biggest sites facebook, youtube, etc constantly making changes to the annoyance of their users. It’s a bit of of no news is bad news, which keeps people talking and slowly getting used to a new version of the site.

 

 

For the last few years it seemed like maybe the site had gone the way of myspace, but suddenly it’s had a resurgence. Taking note from the evolution of the web Hot or Not made a switch from a website to a phone app. And now they’re the talk of the town… or Vine which has a giant community, that’s fast growing, ego driving and loving it.

What’s changed is the simple rating site has change in to a social networking site with a dating slant. Now as you rate pictures you like if the recipient also rates you has Hot you both get informed for a possible rendezvous!
