Music Monday : Songs That Make Me Think Of People
It’s actually kind of a rarity for me to associate a song with a particular person. Often there’s connection, that time I saw 10,000 Maniacs with Yossi. Hilary introducing me to Cursive. I’ve know tons of people in bands, Pete from the Push Overs, Doug and all the shows he organized with local PA bands… Hell I hung out with At the Drive-In and Jets to Brazil more often than I can count.
But that doesn’t really create a visceral connection to a single track. I have no definitive memory that isolate them to a single song.
5) Everclear – Santa Monica : Dave
I never in my life thought I’d leave Pennsylvania, and especially note for a big city like Los Angeles. As a kid I always feared such places. crimes, guns, gangs, sex, drugs. Death was a potential risk at ever turn. So when my friend, artist David Campbell Wilson told me this song made him think of me, it immediately was cemented in my memory with him. I cannot hear it with out remembering him telling me this. Even though way before that it had become a favorite song of mine.
I’ve actually never seen the video for this before. Pretty straight forward and literal, but that’s not a bad thing.
4) Faith no More – We Care A lot: John Davis
This kind of just slips in. Along time ago, in a world far away, and life time I don’t remember, when maybe I was a different person… there was a night like a dream – actually it was more like a dream like a life. I remember fading away in my room as this album played. My friend John Davis was over and doing something on my computer, playing a game… it may have been Ultima III – maybe not. I remember very little, except I kept waking up and fading away in to dream… or sleeping and fading away in to life… and in between where the most incredible dreams, and in between this was this album.
3) Jawbreaker – Ash Tray Monument : Tom & Chris
One horribly depressing night in Pennsylvania, I sat in a car with Tom Hoban and Chris Martino. They had just gotten their hands on a new jawbreaker album, and we sat in a Denny’s parking lot and listened to the whole thing. We sat and smoked and talked about girls, relationships, and various degrees of the crazy that both were. Unlike other times where people have introduced me to a band or album, there is a song that reminds me always of that evening, and more over it reminds me of Tom and Chris, and that I miss them very much in my life.
This is actually a pretty cool cover of it
but if you want to hear the original, check it out here.
2) Pegboy – Strong Reaction : Nic
I have probably found a way to squeeze this song in to 90% of my lists. It is my favorite of all time, and it could be for this exact reason. Strong Reaction is completely cemented in my life and connected to my best friend Nic. There is really no easy way of explaining it. I can simply say Pegboy is probably both our favorite bands. We’ve spent hours, days, lives talking about them. We root for them, we pride them as our secret, we live lives based on their words and themes.
And I kind of love the simplistic 80’sness of this video
1) Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros – Home : Amanda
It seems impossible to not have Strong Reaction as my #1 (and any other year, it would have been easily). But life moves on, people move on. This isn’t as simple as a song about love, or a list prioritized by it. The song in such simple words stats Home is wherever I’m with you – and I’ve finally found this person in Amanda. It just so happens this song is her ring tone, and it’s linked to her physically as well as thematically.
I kind of really like the nuance of this live version on Letterman. It’s kind of an amazing spectacle to watch these two singers completely in love with each other seeing the heights they can dream together on national television.
