The New Facebook Email Groups
So this morning facebook announced it will be launching a new groups product.
This is NOT a revamping of the old groups product. As Mark Zuckerberg stated this is a new product that was created from the ground up, not built on top of the old product.
The intention to make a small social email group, intended for families, clubs, businesses, etc.
When they say small they state numbers like 25, 50, 100.
Groups will effectively replace Email Lists and the Old Groups.
Both email lists and old groups that have previously been created will continue to exist, however new “old groups” cannot be created. From what I gathered Email lists will continue to be something people could create.
The interesting thing about Groups is:
- It will be socially regulated – if John invites Mark to ‘Super Cool Awesome Group’ – the group will be notifyed “John invited Mark to Super Cool Awesome Group” – So if Mark shouldn’t be there, we’ll all know to blame John… and pee in his coffee.
- Entire groups will be able to use the built in facebook chat together – this is why groups is intedid to be small. Imagine 30,000 people on facebook chat at once talking about how they love twilight. The internet would explode in vomit.
- Group event invitations – this wasn’t a major talking point, but an answer from the Q&A implied selecting all members of a group to invite to an event would be a “few clicks” – which may or may not be a good thing 😉
So that’s the gist of things I picked up. I did miss the first 25 minutes of the live stream.
Groups will start being rolled out today slowly. They implied it would get to all users pretty quickly, sounds like a few days at the most.
However – users themselves will also be able to spread the functionality by creating a group and inviting their friends to that group!
